| Good
audiogram, good clinical acumen,
careful observation, and open communication
with the patient go a long way to
achieve adequate fit. Hearing aids
are complex equipment and needs
expertise for correct fitting. Correct
diagnosis without correct management
is futile. So select a good centre
for hearing aid prescription. |
|
|
| In
children correct hearing aid fitting
is more difficult as response to
commands, post hearing aid fitting
is not forthcoming. It is based
on the objective test results and
evaluation of response post AVT.
Parents have to play an important
role is evaluation. It is imperative
to keep in mind, that a hearing
aid evaluation with a pre verbal
child is an ongoing process and
that all recommendations are subject
to modification as further information
regarding the child’s hearing
loss is obtained. |

|
| Yes,
hearing aid or a cochlear implant
can compensate nearly all types
of hearing loss. The limiting factor
is the cost. Only patients with
central processing deficit [very
rarely seen] cannot be helped with
a hearing aid. |
|
|
| Hearing
aid has to be prescribed and fitted,
not purchased. Good prescription
is mandatory for good acceptance.
Hearing being a subjective feeling
correct amplification and education
of the patient is mandatory for
patient satisfaction. There is no
replacement for careful observation,
clinical acumen and open communication
with the patient. |

Like spectacles
hearing aid is a compensatory
device and not a curative device.
It helps by amplification of
sounds. When ever a patient
feels the handicap due to hearing
loss they should be fitted with
Hearing aids. We recommend use
of a hearing aid only if all
treatment modalities have been
exhausted.

You
should purchase the best sounding hearing
aid you can afford. It is recommended
that you wear two aids, so try two. Don't
assume that you'll hear adequately with
one until you actually compare.
Correct diagnosis without correct management
is futile. Hearing aids are complex and
costly. Benefit can be achieved only by
good expertise. Four factors to be considered
actively are: |
|
|
|
Sound energy Factor
- Unlike light, Sound is a complex
form of energy. To compensate this
complex energy, a good hearing aid
is also very complex equipment.
Hence it is important that the individual
understands hearing aids and the
need to fit quality hearing aids.
This helps a long way to achieve
the right selection and correct
fitting. |
|
|
|
Patient factors
- Perception of hearing is a subjective
feeling. To achieve a good prescription,
the co-operation of the person receiving
the hearing aid is of utmost importance.
The same is possible only when the
individual understands the complexity
involved in the prescription.
Motivation of the patient on the
need for hearing aid is of paramount
importance. Denial of a hearing
problem reduces motivation, which
diminishes chances of a successful
fitting. With usage listening quality
usually improves so patient should
be encouraged to the maximum to
use a hearing aid. |
|
|
|
Audiological factors
- Correct audiogram is a must for
successful Hearing aid prescription.
Pure Tone audiogram [PTA] should
be done with a well calibrated audiometer,
in a good centre, by a sincere audiologist
/ technician. Even a slight mistake
in the audiogram will lead to poor
fitting. So never compromise on
audiogram quality. Compensated hearing
should cover the speech Banana in
Toto. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
Where
to purchase a hearing aid - Select
a reliable, accountable, traditional,
reputed and good hearing health
care centre.
Hearing aids are daily use items
and will need good after sale service
support. Poor after sale service
can be a nightmare. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
They
believe their hearing loss
is of a degree not needing
amplification. |
|
|
They
believe a hearing aid cannot
help their kind of problem. |
|
|
A
reluctance to wear an aid
because of a belief that
it is bulky and unsightly. |
|
|
Non
availability of good hearing
health care professional
services. |
|
|
Prescription
and procurement of an appropriate
hearing aid is too expensive
and difficult to arrange. |
|
|
Poor after
sale service, of procured
hearing aids. |
|
|
Physicians
unaware of advances in hearing
aid technology and fitting
technique would not refer
hearing impaired people
who would have benefited
from a hearing aid, for
sthe same. Some even discourage
due to their ignorance. |
